Father Damien or Saint Damien of Molokai was born January 3rd, 1840 in Belgium and lived until April 15th, 1889. He is famous for his unending kindness and ministry to people with leprosy. President Obama stated, "...he gave voice to the voiceless and dignity to the sick." Father Damien Day is celebrated statewide on April 15. On Sunday October 11th, 2009 Father Damien was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI as Saint Damien.
